FAQs
Here are some questions that are commonly asked by patients:
1. Are there any backpack restrictions I should follow?
For the rest of the school year post-op:
- Only carry items lighter than a gallon of milk (10 lbs.).
- Ask to borrow one set of textbooks to keep at home and one set to keep at school.
- Rolling backpacks are recommended.
2. When can I go back to school?
- Your doctor will recommend going back to school when you can sit through one class period without being uncomfortable or in pain.
- The timeframe will vary based on the individual but typically you'll be able to return to school after 4 weeks.
- You may also choose to have a teacher or tutor come to your home to assist with your school work.
3. What will my scar look like once it's healed?
- Your scar will look like a long straight line down the middle of your back.
- The incision is sealed with glue (not sutures).
- You're encouraged to stay out of the sun and apply mineral sunscreen to improve the appearance of the scar.
- The steri-strips should remain intact for as long as possible to allow the scar to properly heal with less long term visibility.
